Town of East Hampton

Local Waterfront Revitalization Program

Montauk Point

The Town of East Hampton has completed preparation of a Local Waterfront Revitalization Program (LWRP), which is a locally prepared, comprehensive land and water use plan for its natural, public, working waterfront, and developed waterfront resources. The East Hampton LWRP provides a comprehensive framework within which critical waterfront issues can be addressed and planned waterfront improvement projects can be pursued and implemented.

The Town of East Hampton prepared its LWRP with financial and technical assistance from the New York State Department of State and in accordance with the New York State Waterfront Revitalization of Coastal Areas and Inland Waterways Act and the New York State Coastal Management Program.

The East Hampton LWRP is a comprehensive coastal management program that is based on the policies of the New York State Coastal Management Program.  The East Hampton Town Board adopted their LWRP on December 3, 1999. The East Hampton LWRP was then approved by the New York State Secretary of State on December 20, 2007. Following approval by the NYS Secretary of State, the East Hampton LWRP was incorporated into the New York State Coastal Management Program by action of the U.S. Office of Ocean and Coastal Resources Management on August 26, 2008. With State and Federal approval, the East Hampton LWRP will serve to coordinate State and Federal actions needed to achieve the Town's goals for its waterfront area.

East Hampton’s LWRP refines State policies commensurate with local circumstances, identifies long-term uses and short term projects to be accommodated within the waterfront area, and includes an implementation strategy which describes what the Town can do to implement the policies and purposes of the program, and assistance needed from the State.

In the East Hampton LWRP, the 44 State policies have been arranged into a series of Policy Reports based on coastal issues.  To locate information in the LWRP, find the appropriate Policy Report.  Within the various policy reports, information on the Inventory and Analysis is provided at both a townwide and shoreline reach level.  Project Recommendations are also found in each policy report, and summarized as Proposed Projects in Section XIV of the LWRP.
